Consider the opposite

From “The Seven Democratic Virtues: What You Can Do to Overcome Tribalism and Save Our Democracy” by Christopher Beem
As I have noted repeatedly, biases are endemic and mostly unconscious. We cannot stop them from happening, but we can develop strategies that help us diminish their effects. These strategies are called metacognitive. They help us think about how we think. There are lots of examples of metacognitive strategies. A student might, for example, determine that her reading comprehension is not as good if she is in a reclined position as opposed to upright in a chair. Other strategies are more directly concerned with our biases. Of those strategies that educators and researchers have investigated to determine their effectiveness, the “most well attested in the literature” is called consider the opposite.
