From “Defending Democracy from its Christian Enemies” by David P. Gushee
Sometimes antidemocratic political thought is explicitly taught in traditionalist Christian communities. I know it because I have seen it, in the curriculum taught to my children in a Christian school they attended for a while. That was twenty years ago, so I checked online to see if the curriculum is still in use. It is. Under the title “The Principle Approach,” this widely used curriculum for Christian school and homeschool teaching claims that “the form of government proven to best protect life and property is a Christian constitutional federal republic.” And: “Civil government takes into account man’s sinful nature and exists to secure the God-given rights of the individual. Civil government is based upon God’s law, not the will of the people.”
As of this writing, some emerging Republican leaders and candidates in the United States are expressing this rhetoric nearly exactly. Their vision is often of an end to the separation of church and state and an officially Christian government attempting to enforce biblical laws.
