This book focuses on the type of progressive Christian political engagement championed by Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and many others in the public square and outside the walls of the church. Entering the story of progressive Christianity in the United States in the midst of a theological battle might seem like an odd choice. But our views on theological battles have a profound effect on our social witness in the public square. Those of us interested in reforming society often have a keen interest in reforming the church to live up to the same values we champion outside its walls. Jesus calls us to champion the same values of inclusion, reason, and justice in our own religious institutions and in society as a whole.
