From “The Hidden Roots of White Supremacy: and the Path to a Shared American Future” by Robert P. Jones
As a southerner, I’ve always been intrigued by the power of place. While the national struggles grab the headlines, local efforts are reshaping the stories we tell about our communities. This book tells the story of how contemporary residents of three places – Tallahatchie County, Mississippi; Duluth, Minnesota; Tulsa, Oklahoma – have worked across racial lines to tell a truer story about their past. These three communities represent unique points in our history and disparate geographic and cultural environments. Like facets of a prism, each community refracts the historical light differently. And each is at a different point on the path toward reckoning with this legacy, repairing its downstream damage, and building a shared future.
