I don’t even pretend to understand that response anymore

From “US: The Resurrection of American Terror” by Rev. Kenneth W. Wheeler

Each time that I entered an all white congregation I was acutely aware of my blackness. I could not hide that nor did I want to hide it. This was a part of who I was and who I am. I hear whites who say that color doesn’t matter; to me, they will say, “When I see you, Ken, I don’t see color.” I don’t even pretend to understand that response anymore, because in truth if you don’t see my color then you don’t see me. This is the invisibleness that Ralph Ellison writes about in Invisible Man. And more to the point, if you “don’t see” my color then you haven’t taken me or my humanity seriously.
